Dental emergencies never happen at a convenient time. Whether it is a sudden toothache at dinner, a knocked-out tooth on the soccer field, or a broken crown over the weekend, knowing what to do can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
Common Dental Emergencies
Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any trapped debris. Over-the-counter pain medication can help manage discomfort until you can see us. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum — this can cause a chemical burn.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time is critical. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), never the root. If possible, gently rinse it and place it back in the socket. If you cannot reinsert it, keep it moist in milk or saliva. Get to our office within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Save any pieces if possible. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If there is a sharp edge, you can cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheeks.
Lost Crown or Filling
Keep the crown if you still have it. You can temporarily reattach it with denture adhesive or toothpaste. Avoid chewing on that side until we can properly recement or replace it.
When to Go to the Emergency Room
Head to the ER if you experience uncontrolled bleeding, a jaw fracture, or severe swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing. For all other dental emergencies, call us first — we can often see you the same day.
