One of the most common questions we hear at Heritage Dental Arts is, "How often do I really need to come in?" The short answer: most patients benefit from a dental visit every six months. But the full picture depends on your individual oral health.
The Standard Recommendation
The American Dental Association recommends regular dental visits at intervals determined by your dentist. For most healthy adults and children, that means a checkup and professional cleaning every six months. These visits allow us to catch small problems before they become big ones — a tiny cavity is much easier (and less expensive) to treat than a tooth that needs a crown or root canal.
Who Might Need More Frequent Visits?
Some patients benefit from visits every three to four months. This includes patients with:
- Gum disease (periodontal disease)
- A history of frequent cavities
- Diabetes or other conditions that affect oral health
- Weakened immune systems
- Current orthodontic treatment
What Happens During a Routine Visit?
At Heritage Dental Arts, your routine visit typically includes digital x-rays (as needed), a thorough cleaning by our hygienist, and a comprehensive exam by Dr. Pervaiz. We check for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and any changes in your overall oral health.
The Cost of Skipping Visits
We understand that life gets busy. But skipping dental visits often leads to more extensive — and more expensive — treatment down the road. A small cavity caught early might need a simple filling. Left undetected for a year or two, that same cavity could require a crown or even a root canal.
If it has been a while since your last dental visit, there is no judgment here. We are happy to welcome you back and help you get on track. Call Heritage Dental Arts at (703) 349-0099 to schedule your appointment.
