Conscious Sedation

Relaxed, comfortable dental care for anxious patients

Sedation Dentistry in Gainesville, VA

Dental anxiety should never prevent you from getting the care you need. At Heritage Dental Arts, we offer conscious sedation — also known as anxiolysis — to help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your treatment.

What Is Conscious Sedation (Anxiolysis)?

Anxiolysis is a minimal level of sedation where you remain fully awake and responsive but feel calm and at ease. Unlike deeper forms of sedation, anxiolysis simply takes the edge off — reducing anxiety while allowing you to breathe on your own, respond to conversation, and remain in control throughout your procedure. It is one of the safest forms of sedation available in dentistry.

At Heritage Dental Arts, we offer two methods of conscious sedation:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a small mask over your nose. It takes effect within minutes, helps you feel calm and at ease, and wears off quickly after treatment. You can drive yourself home after your appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For patients with moderate to severe anxiety, oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment. You will remain conscious but deeply relaxed — many patients describe feeling drowsy and may not remember much of the procedure afterward.

Who Benefits from Sedation?

Your safety is our top priority. Dr. Pervaiz will review your medical history and determine which sedation option is right for you. Vital signs are monitored throughout your visit to ensure your comfort and well-being.
